[Volunteering to drink from a stream that they don't know much about seems a bit strange to him, unless there's a way Law can tell and be confident about the water being safe.

Maybe it's a side effect of the devil fruit he ate?]

[he sits up and shakes out his spiky hair like a dog, reveling in the feeling of the cool drops running down his heated neck]

Yeah. Or yours, if it came to that. [he shoots Izuku a wary look] Part of the reason they tried to keep my power suppressed. It's the reason I ate the fruit in the first place.

[speaking of their captors, it might be about time to give removing the collar and bracelet a try. As disconcerting as it might be for Deku to have his hand "amputated" and reattached, he should go first so it doesn't surprise him when Law removes his own head for a bit. He makes that decision easily.]

Do you want to see what I can really do with my ability?

[What kind of strange power- If it filter out poison from both the wielder of the quirk and people he chooses, that's amazing. Especially considering what else he's seen it do. He wonders if at it's base level, it's essentially a teleportation quirk that just needs targets for larger objects-

He nods enthusiastically.]

I'd like to. [There's never a bad time to learn about new powers, after all.]

[oh Izuku, you have no idea. The common description for the Ope-Ope fruit is free manipulation.

As long as they're sitting on the bank of the stream, Law just turns and gets comfortable, stretching out a hand]

I can take your bracelet off. But you have to promise me you're not going to freak out at what you see. I will have to take you apart and put you back together again, but you will feel no pain, nothing. When I'm finished, it'll be like nothing ever happened. Deal?

[He doesn't know a lot the devil fruits, but free manipulation sounds like an amazingly useful skill- and likely very strong, if he can encompass an entire palace.

He nods. After all that's happened-]

I trust you.

[This is going to be, weird, but he's sitting up and clearly going to be paying a lot of attention.]

[Law usually doesn't mind freaking people out by doing what he does without warning, but this is a special circumstance. So, full disclosure, he takes the knife out and lets it be seen, first.]

Room.

[No need to shout the command, he murmurs it gently and only summons a Room big enough to contain the two of them. The smaller it is, the less energy it wastes. He works quickly, having no name for the practical medical moves like this and not wanting Deku to lose his shit, taking his arm and stretching it out between them. The knife flashes in one quick strike, and the hand briefly floats in the air between them. There is no blood, no injury, it's like Izuku is made of clay and he simply cleaved off an excess bit. Law yanks the bracelet off and tosses it aside before snatching the hand out of the air and reattaching it, drawing his fingertips over Izuku's wrist and around it to make sure the attachment holds.

As soon as he's certain it's all good, Law banishes the Room and lets him have his arm back to inspect it if necessary. But it leaves no scar, feels like nothing, just as he promised.]

[He doesn't freak out, exactly. But the moment that his arm gets... cut? Cut off, even temporarily, he notices that he feels nothing from it. No pain, no injury, no blood- nothing that would logically happen, and instead of freaking out...

He starts mumbling to himself, the fact that it's a strange, but certainly powerful ability. There would certainly be at least a dozen different ways to be able to use it in a positive way- would it hurt as soon as he stepped out side of the Room Law summoned? Does it require a knife to cut so cleanly? Or would it work even if he tried to pull it off? It clearly doesn't need anesthesia, a doctor could do so much with something like this. Can it work on internal organs, or is limited to what Law can actually cut...?

The mumbling doesn't stop even as he inspects his arm. And it won't stop until Law interrupts him.]

[It actually gives him a great sense of satisfaction to hear that running analysis. Izuku has most of it right, it's an extremely useful technique in the hands of a doctor like him, surgeries are a breeze. He's even removed bullets from his own body with it. He leaves the Room down for a minute, so his patient can verify that his hand isn't going to suddenly fall off with it gone, and then summons it again. It's his own turn.

He lets Izuku ramble on, it seems to be distracting him enough. Law needs the utmost concentration now, to cleanly slice his neck in the right spot, hold his head in place, and yank the collar away before putting everything back the way it needs to be. While he's at it, he draws his fingertips along his right arm in the place where it hurts the most, commanding the fracture to heal so he can use it.

Once everything is replaced and the collar falls to the ground, useless, Law banishes the Room again and sits back with a deep breath.]

Much better. How do you feel? No effects after that?

[Both his arm and his wrist feel completely normal. Which is weird, considering it was detached from him for a few seconds but Law cut off his head. But it is Law's power, he must feel very comfortable with it to do something that seems so dangerous.]

Um... I'm fine. It feels good? It was weird, but now it feels normal- thank you-- Are you okay? Did you study a lot of anatomy before getting your power- or was it the other way around?

Fine. [this is a guy who regularly removes his own heart from his body for insurance purposes, okay?] Yeah. I...

[dammit, this kid. Getting him to actually talk about himself, his past, his life. But being on the run together is no time to clam up and tell him to mind his own business.]

My parents were both doctors. I studied medicine with them while I was still in primary school. The Ope-Ope fruit only enhanced my skills, and made it possible for me to become an expert surgeon.

[and a pirate, yes.]

[A strange man, but if he could insure that his vitals were out of the way...

No he probably wouldn't do that, it seems disconcerting, plus he's no doctor. That could go very poorly for him.

But with Law offering a bit about himself, he figures he should offer something back.]

My mom has a quirk that lets her pull small objects to her, and my dad can breathe fire. But I've... always wanted to become a hero... I wasn't really cut out for it like a lot of people, so I just have to work much harder than everyone else.

[His own quirk is something entirely different from his parents.]

These quirks. Does everyone in your world have them? Are they natural, hereditary? Something people have to awaken or discover?

[he's fascinated! And they deserve this little break to rest, anyway.]

Not everybody, but most people these days. 80% of the world population has a quirk of some sort, and the other 20% don't have one. [Quirkless is what they're called. There's no way he could forget something like that when he was one of those people for fifteen years of his life.]

They're natural and hereditary. Usually they come in around four.

[And usually the child's quirk is one of their parents, or a combination of their parents.]

Powers like yours- They're not natural, right? You had to eat the devil fruit?

[a world in which nearly everyone was powered...? Such a thing would turn the Age of Piracy into pure chaos, which is saying a lot considering how much chaos there already is. If everyone had an ability...

At the question, Law gives one quick nod]

There are hundreds of types of fruit, but each one has a unique power. There are no duplicates. Some are said to be more powerful than others, but I firmly believe it's all in how you use it.

[he's seen it for himself, that something as goofy as rubber can be more powerful than ice, flame, and earthquakes.]

[It's only working so well now because All Might is there are the Symbol of Peace- but his time probably isn't going to last too much longer considering everything that's happened to him.]

That makes sense.

[He nods.]

It'll depend on who has the most experience with their abilities and what they're used to doing with them. There are plenty of quirks that don't seem very useful at first glance, but every quirk can be useful, it just depends on what you need to use them for.

Oh- but most quirks also come with drawbacks. Aizawa-sensei can temporarily erase somebody's quirk, but when he blinks the effect stops until his eyes are open again. It's not a combat heavy quirk, but it's definitely useful, and he's very skilled in close combat maneuvers.

Mm. As do Devil Fruit. You've seen the limitations of mine, after all. And all ability-users become hated by the sea, and lose the ability to swim.

[he trails his hand through the running water beside him, though, because it's so small and insignificant compared to the sea, and the flow of the river means it has far less effect on him than a still lake would]

It sounds as though the skilled quirk-users from your world would be formidable against Devil Fruit-users from mine. Interesting. And you choose to use it to become heroes rather than devils.

It's strange there's a blanket limitation like that...

[He looks up at the sky for a moment.]

When I was really young I watched All Might save a hundred people from a burning bus all on his own. And ever since then I wanted to be able to do that, to help people who needed it. Heroes are amazing, and I kept tabs on all of them, from the rookies to the veterans. I had notes on all their works and the things that they were best suited to.

It would definitely be an interesting fight- ah. Not that this is a good time to test- and besides, I don't have a quirk like Aizawa-sensei. The only thing mine can change is me.

[shaking the water off his fingertips, Law quietly folds his hands in his lap. It's cute, someone studying powers the way some study books on Devil Fruit, imagining the pros and cons of each. They really aren't so different on some level, are they?]

Is there no one who uses their quirk for criminal purposes? Where I come from, it goes both ways. All the Marine admirals and most of their vice-admirals are Devil Fruit-users, but so are the most powerful pirates.

[not that Law ever had designs on being anyone's mentor, but given the similarities and the universal properties of learning to control a power, he actually has advice he could impart.]

That doesn't make it better or worse for your goal. Many Paramecia types also can only alter themselves - Logia, as well. And yet Logia type users are considered the most powerful. As I mentioned, it's all in what you do with it. Versatility is the key.

There are. There's um... a group of villains. One of them has a quirk that basically turns his body into a warp gate of black mist? I don't know a lot about how it works- but it seems like he does have a body in there somewhere. And another one has disintegration. He needs to touch five fingers to the object or person he wants to uh... destroy.

[There's also All for One, but Deku doesn't know nearly enough about that guy in particular.]

Oh, no it doesn't- I'm glad to have my quirk! It's just not a great idea to fight here and now. We're not doing well on food, and expending energy like that's probably going to bite us badly later. I still need to work on being able to use more than 5% of it though...

[He looks down at his right hand, scarred up and slightly mangled from the time he broke it twice over in one fight.

He brings his left hand to it to trace the two scars on each side.]

I'll need some weights, whenever we're safe.

[for a moment, the thought of black mist and warp gates makes Law suck in a breath. But no, Blackbeard couldn't exist in two worlds at once. Still, that was a chilling image brought to mind. He banishes it with a shake of his head, and then a soft laugh under his breath for Deku's idea.]

I wasn't suggesting we fight. Though, now that you say that, perhaps someday. When we're healthy, when we're in a place where we don't have to fear being manipulated into heinous acts. If you still want to run with me, I'll make sure you have weights and anything else you need.

[he's still intent on rescuing Kikoku from the dank depths of the Wulgrimm fortress, too. He'll use another sword in the meantime but if he can get his nodachi back, so much the better.]

Well. We've taken care of one thing. If they're still pursuing us, they won't be able to control us. I have no intention of going back to them, I will expend every ounce of energy in my body to prevent that. You're right, though - we need to find food.

[Law is the best chance he's got in this world.]

[Law's ability is fascinating, and seeing it in action especially in a fight against him- that would give him a great opportunity to analyze and learn the power first hand.]

If there's a stream here, then animals might come to it? Or monsters?

I don't know about the plants here enough to try eating any of them.

[so blase. But they're in this for the long haul, it seems. Law pushes himself back up to his feet, finding it much easier this time, and dusts off his jeans.]

I don't trust the plants. I wouldn't be able to tell which ones are poisonous, they're all strange. We're safer with animals or known farm crops.

It looks like this stream runs eastward for a bit, we can walk along it and see if anything crosses our path.

[It's better than nothing, but he'll correct their course if the stream no longer serves their purposes. And, hey, they won't have to conserve water so long as they have a source nearby.]

By the way, what did you call the types of devil fruit? Paramecia and... Logia types?

[A little walking conversation will do them good and pass the time until they can scare up something to hunt or eat. Sources of their powers? That's a good topic]

There are three - the third is Zoan, animal types. Mine is a Paramecia, those can be almost anything. Logia are elements. The user becomes a natural phenomenon, such as fire, ice, lava, lightning...

[like most of the admirals, he reminds himself. Boy, he does not miss that in this place.]

Do quirks have a sorting system, or are they just dependent on how you use them?

There are three classes of quirks too. Emitter, transformation and mutant.

Emitter is the most common, and it's the kind that I have. Aizawa-sensei's Erasure quirk one too. Controlling and creating fire and ice would be an emitter class too.

Transformation lets the user temporarily transform their body into something else. Like turning their body into metal or growing huge.

And a mutant type- those are always active and can't be turned off, because they're part of the person's physiology. I have a classmate that's constantly invisible because of her quirk. Another one has eight arms, and the ability to replicate any of his body parts onto them, like ears or mouths.
